Fr. Cornelius Lapide: Muslims, Jews & Calvinists Don’t Worship The True God

Fr. Cornelius Lapide, Commentary on John 4:22- “Ver. 22.  You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Judeans.  Here Christ responds directly to the woman’s question and settles the dispute concerning the adoration of God in favor of the Judeans, condemning the Samaritans as schismatics.  He says: O Samaritans, you worship what do you not know, because you worship the God of the Judeans with your Assyrian idols; and making God as it were an associate of idols, you therefore worship a false and fictitious God.  Again, you worship a God different from the God of the Judeans, that is one who is the Lord of your land alone, who therefore is false and has been invented by you… In the same manner the Turks and Jews worship a God whom they do not know, because they deny Him to be a Trinity of Persons.  Thus also Calvin with his followers, denying the omnipotence of God, and making Him cruel in condemning certain men to hell without any demerit on their part, worship not a true, but a false God.  For the true God is Almighty, and most kind.”
